Fandoms

The urban dictionary defines fandom as:

"The community that surrounds a tv show/movie/book etc. Fanfiction writers, artists, poets, and cosplayers are all members of that fandom. Fandoms often consist of message boards, livejournal communities, and people"

There are many fandoms, and recently they've become more important between the youngests generation thanks to the social media, specially thanks to twitter. The most popular fandoms are the ones that suport:

• Music groups such as One Direction or 5SOS
• Movies or books like The Fault In Our Stars or The Hunger Games
• Tv shows like How I Met Your Mother or Game of Thrones
• Sports, YouTube, Etc

There many groups like these and I could keep going all day long. But here the important thing is that many of this people/movies/shows/etc. nowadays are known by all the world thanks to them. Barely no one would know who Harry Styles is if the group didn't have such amount of fans. Nowadays even my grandad, who doesn't know how his TV works, knows the british band.

Usually young girls are the ones who tend the most to have idols. that's why they invented the word fangirl, which is the noun that refears to the person who is fan of something. From this word someone invented the verb fangirling and this is used for the people who act exrtemely emotional when their idol does or says anything. Literally anything. It's amazing how have they even come up with a new term to define themselves.


Fandoms can sometimes be a very nice place to be in because you can interact and talk to people with the same taste as you, and you can know new people though this groups. But it can also be a dangerous site. Many people become obsessed with their idols and in some tragic situations they've become obsessed to the death. 


They have a lot of power and they can make things happen for real. Many famous people have to thank their success entirely to their fanbases. I believe that we have a really strong weapon to make a change, Internet. Not many people realise the power of words neither of social networls. We could really take a huge profit from them and we must do it. Everytime you tweet, post on facebook, upload a video, etc. think carefully about what you're doing and try to influence positively your followers or friends
